Nocturia, or excessive urination at night, is often the symptom of an
underlying medical condition. This condition can be quite bothersome. Generally,
people can sleep 6 to 8 hours without feeling the need to pass urine. But, in
case of people suffering from nocturia, the need to urinate is more frequent.
Could Kidney Failure cause this problem?
Healthy kidneys filter the blood by removing waste products and excreting
excess body water. Hence, kidney function can affect the healthy of the whole
body.
Kidney Failure happens when the kidneys are not able to remove wastes from
the body. Due to the reduced ability of the kidney to form concentrated urine
during the night, impaired kidney function can lead to the need to void several
times during the night.
The other terms referring to nocturia are nycturia and nighttime urination.
Due to excessive urination at night, a person's "body clock" is altered, so this
is a debilitating problem. Some negative effects of this condition include
fatigue and feeling cold during the daytime. Moreover, dehydration and imbalance
of body fluid may occur because of significant loss of fluid and
electrolytes.
How to treat nocturia/excessive urination at night caused by Kidney
Failure?
1. Modify daily behavioral changes. Limit the amount of liquid intake after a
certain hour. Elevate leg at bedtime. Take naps in the late morning to mid
afternoon.
2. Take medications to regulate the urine production and reduce the amount
accumulated at night.
3. Receive traditional Chinese medicine treatment like acupuncture, as a more
holistic alternative.
