Dietary Management of Nephrotic Syndrome

1. Can patients with Nephrotic Syndrome eat salt and alkali?
Quantity of salt intake for normal adults is about 5 to 6g every day. In some areas, everyone can take 12g salt every day. If patients take more salt and alkali which have sodium, there is water retention in body, inducing swelling. Therefore, patients with swelling should control quantity of salt and alkali. Generally, urine output of normal people is 1000~2000ml per day. Patients with Acute Nephritis, Acute Renal Failure in oliguria period, Nephrotic Syndrome, Chronic Renal Failure should control quantity of water intake. More water which can’t be discharged will cause swelling and aggravate high blood pressure. There is no limitation for patients whose urine output is normal. In addition, patients with urinary tract infection should drink more water which is beneficial for illness rehabilitation.
Some patients with kidney disease should control water intake strictly. In hot season, patients can take more water and salt to supplement the loss of water which is caused by sweat. If patients have the symptoms of vomit and diarrhea, they should supplement salt and water appropriately.
3. Can patients with Nephrotic Syndrome eat fish, shrimp, eggs and meat?
Fish contains high quality protein, so patients should not avoid eating fish. There are high qualities of minerals in shrimp, which can aggravate kidney burden. Patients shouldn’t eat shrimp and crab. But they can eat eggs and mean meat appropriately.
