Renal Failure, also known as kidney failure, can happen as an acute one-time
disease or an a chronic condition that develops over several years. Patients
need to change their dietary arrangement depending on their individual
condition. The following are some suggestions for you.
● Most patients with high blood pressure and fluid retention need to limit
the sodium intake to a maximum of 2,000 mg per day. Avoid salt substitutes,
because they are loaded with potassium. Avoid processed canned and cured
meats.
● People with mild to moderate Renal Failure are always requested to restrict
the intake of protein, except those who are malnourished. You can include 2~3
servings of high quality foods daily by eating lean meat, fish, poultry and
eggs. Each serving is 3 ounces, and limit to a total of 8 ounces daily. The
intake of milk, yogurt, ice cream or sherbet need to be just one 1/2 cup serving
per day.
● High phosphorus levels can effect calcium absorption, so bone may become
weak and fracture. Therefore, you need to restrict high phosphorus foods
including dairy products, legumes, nuts, peanut butter, dried beans, seed,
lentils and drinks like beer and dark cola drinks.
● Stay away from the salty snack foods like pretzels and chips. Bread,
no-salt-added type crackers, tortillas can be ate in moderation. Cream of wheat,
oatmeal and plain dry cereals can be involved in the diet.
● Daily intake of fluids can be limited to 6 cups or 48 ounces. Proper fluids include water, coffee, tea, lemonade, carbonated beverages
and cranerry juice.
