Microalbuminuria May Imply Kidney Damage in Diabetes
In normal condition, there is only a slight amount of albumin in urine less than 20mg/L. When the albumin level is above the normal range, it is called microalbuminuria which is a sensitive index in reflecting early kidney damage in Diabetes. Therefore, the patients should be particularly alert to the albumin in urine.
Kidneys are responsible for filtering blood and discharge the metabolic wastes from body. Constant and poor control of blood glucose level can damage the filters (glomeruli) in kidneys thus resulting in kidney damage.
Diabetes Kidney Disease can be divided into five stages. However, in the first and second stages, the kidneys have pathological changes, but the patients do not have noticeable symptoms.
With the progression of Diabetes Kidney Disease, the filters in kidneys get more damage and can not keep the proteins remain in body thus resulting in proteins in urine. In stage 3 of Diabetes Kidney Disease, persistent microalbuminuria occurs. However, the routine urinalysis does not show abnormality at all. If the patients can take proper treatment in stage 3, they will be able to reverse the disease and stop it from developing into next stage.
However, in most cases, the patients do not know they have kidney disease until they have a mass of proteins in urine and severe edema. In this case, the disease at least has developed into stage 4 and it can not be reversed by conventional therapy.
To avoid severe kidney damage and take the best treatment opportunity, the patients with Diabetes should take regular tests about microalbuminuria and GFR, especially those with more than 10 ten years’ disease history.
Once you are diagnosed with Diabetes Kidney Disease, you need not to feel panic because the latest therapy is able to restore impaired kidneys and improve renal function thus making you avoid developing Renal Failure.
