Improper diet is the main cause of disease. Proper diet is helpful for the
treatment of disease. It is wise to have a proper diet. Reasonable diet for
Nephrotic Syndrome plays an important role in illness rehabilitation. What
should patients with Nephrotic Syndrome eat? What is the quantity of food they
should eat?
1. Can patients with Nephrotic Syndrome eat salt and alkali?
Quantity of salt intake for normal adults is about 5 to 6g every day. In some
areas, everyone can take 12g salt every day. If patients take more salt and
alkali which have sodium, there is water retention in body, inducing swelling.
Therefore, patients with swelling should control quantity of salt and alkali.
Low-salt diet means that everyone should take 2 to 3g every day. It is
unscientific for long-term to be salt-free, which will lead to symptoms, such as
fatigue and dizziness.
2. How much water should patients with Nephrotic Syndrome drink?
Generally, urine output of normal people is 1000~2000ml per day. Patients
with Acute Nephritis, Acute Renal Failure in oliguria period, Nephrotic
Syndrome, Chronic Renal Failure should control quantity of water intake. More
water which can’t be discharged will cause swelling and aggravate high blood
pressure. There is no limitation for patients whose urine output is normal. In
addition, patients with urinary tract infection should drink more water which is
beneficial for illness rehabilitation.
Some patients with kidney disease should control water intake strictly. In
hot season, patients can take more water and salt to supplement the loss of
water which is caused by sweat. If patients have the symptoms of vomit and
diarrhea, they should supplement salt and water appropriately.
3. Can patients with Nephrotic Syndrome eat fish, shrimp, eggs and meat?
Fish contains high quality protein, so patients should not avoid eating fish.
There are high qualities of minerals in shrimp, which can aggravate kidney
burden. Patients shouldn’t eat shrimp and crab. But they can eat eggs and mean
meat appropriately.
