Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) is a collection of symptoms which occur because the
glomeruli-tiny filters of the kidneys, become leaky. The glomeruli act as the
kidneys' filters, allowing a certain number of wastes and fluids to be removed
from the blood. Normally, proteins cannot pass through the glomerular filtration
membrane. However, in persons with NS, the filters becomes defective and large
quantities of protein are spilt out into the urine.
NS usually occurs in children aged 6 months to 5 years old, although it can
affect people from all age groups. Boys are two times more likely to suffer from
the disease than girls. It often appears for the first time after a child has
had a cold or infection.
A number of different diseases can lead to NS. In general, the kidney damage
occurs as a result of immune dysfunction. With an abnormal immune system, it
becomes directed against the person's own kidney. The glomeruli become
increasingly leaky as a variety of substances from the immune system are lodged
in the kidneys.
Conventionally, medicines that suppress the immune system are usually applied
to treat NS. With these medications, various symptoms can be improved. However,
they do nothing to rectify the immune dysfunction, so the disease will recur
again and again.
In western medicine, there is not yet a better therapy that can stop the
relapse of NS. How about Chinese medicine then?
