Should Women Get Pregnant after Kidney Transplant

Can I have a healthy baby after kidney transplant? All childbearing women are concerned about this issue very much. The experts point out that if kidney transplant is successful, they can give birth to a healthy baby.

With the recovery of renal function after kidney transplant, they can recover their ovulation, menstruation and sexual desire. If the women meet the following requirements, they can get pregnant.

1. Their transplanted kidneys and physical condition are well in 18 months after kidney transplant.

2. The serum creatinine is less than 177 mmol/L (2grams/dl).

3. The patients do not have hypertension or proteinuria.

4. They just need microdose of immunosuppressant to resist the rejection reaction.

5. There is no seeper in pelvis and kidney calices or expanding of pelvis and kidney calices.

The women had better choose to get pregnancy between 2~5 years after kidney transplant. This is because the patients are very likely to lose renal function within 2 years after kidney transplant for acute rejection reaction. In addition, the incidence of chronic rejection reaction will increase 5 years later after kidney transplant. Some patients may be affected by obviously increased high blood pressure. If the patients get pregnant during this period, about 42 % of them have to terminate pregnancy, or abort spontaneously or have therapeutic abortion. Terminating pregnancy is mainly caused by instable condition of transplanted kidney, aggravation of renal function, unintended pregnancy and so on.

In addition, ectopic pregnancy may also occur, but with a low incidence. In the thirtieth week of pregnancy, glomerular filtration rate may decline temporarily so about 40% of patients usually have proteinuria. However, in most cases, the proteinuria will disappear after birth.

During pregnancy, the incidence of acute rejection reaction is 9% that is the same with the non-pregnancy patients. However, if the acute rejection reaction causes the renal function to decline, usually they should terminate pregnancy. If the liver and renal functions go well, they do not decline their dosage of immunosuppressant. If the pregnant women do not have serious complications after ten weeks of pregnancy, most of them can deliver their babies normally.
