The kidneys perform a wide range of vital functions in the healthy body, such
as:
▪ Removing waste products and extra fluid from the blood
▪ Balancing chemicals in your body
▪ Releasing hormones
▪ Helping control blood pressure
▪ Helping to produce red blood cells
▪ Producing vitamin D, which keeps the bones strong and healthy
When a kidney fails or is damaged, it becomes unable to function adequately.
Kidney damage is also referred to as Renal Failure. This may be progressive and
may be irreversible.
Initially, there may be no symptoms of kidney failure. Over time, signs will
appear as a result of the buildup of toxins and wastes in the body, and
inability of the kidneys to excrete potassium from the blood. Side effects, or
symptoms of kidney failure include:
● More frequent or less urination
● Fatigue or weakness
● Loss of appetite or nausea and vomiting
● Swelling of the hands or feet
● Feel itchy or numb
● Back, or side pain
● Have trouble concentrating
● Darkened skin
● Muscle cramps
● Experience abnormal heart rhythms
● Shortness of breath
