Diabetes Complications in Men

Complications of diabetes are widespread and varied. They are more likely to occur in men. Part of the reason is due to the fact that 1/3 of men with Type 2 Diabetes, the most common form of the disease, are not aware of this fact. Then what complications of diabetes may occur in men?

Retinopathy

Men with diabetes may suffer from diabetic eye diseases include retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. Diabetic nephropathy is the most common eye disorder affecting diabetics. If left untreated, severe conditions such as blindness, impotence and amputations can be the result of patients with retinopathy.

Peripheral Vascular Disorder

Complications of diabetes may also include Peripheral Vascular Disorder, a pain in the thigh, calf, or butt during exercise that is associated with a dramatic increased risk for heart disease and stroke.

Kidney disease

The function of the kidney is to clean the blood. Over long periods of time high blood sugar levels can impair the kidneys, causing buildup the waste products and fluid in the blood stream. Without effective treatment, serious side effects will be caused.

Erectile dysfunction

This is yet another complication of diabetes in men. The severity of the problem varies from the total inability to have an erection, the inability to maintain an erection or the occasional inability to have or maintain an erection. Though this is a problem that can affect all men, men who are suffering from diabetes are more likely to have experienced erectile problems much earlier than those who are not diabetics.

For those who are affected by diabetes, it is important to monitor your blood sugar levels, control the intake of sugar and develop a good lifestyle. Certainly, prevention is better than cure. Effective precautions for diabetes complications are arranging a health and varied diet and doing proper physical activities.
