Diabetes: Rapid Rise in Blood Sugar and Lightheadedness

Diabetes, or Diabetes Mellitus refers to a group of disorders characterized by high blood sugar levels due to the defect of your body's ability to produce and/or use insulin. Many individuals affected by this disease often occur rapid rise in blood sugar and experience lightheadedness. What are the causes?

Reason for rapid rise in blood sugar

▪ Foods (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) that eventually metabolizes into sugar in the digestive system measured by blood sugar reading. The more quickly a food metabolized, the more rapid and unstable the rise in blood sugar.

Example: Simple sugars, such as table sugar, candy, frosting, sweetened fruit fillings, icecream, sodas, etc; white flour like bread, cake, pancakes. Diet drinks can also raise blood sugar mand cause sugar crashes just as much or more than sugar or frutose sweetened drinks.

▪ Stress can trigger high blood sugars because hormones produced to combat stress can also lead to the rise of blood sugar.

Besides, the reasons also include less activity or exercise than usual, and not enough insulin or oral diabetes medicine, etc.

Reasons for lightheadedness in Diabetes

Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure (<90/60 mmHg) occurs when the heart does not effectively pump blood throughout the whole part of the body. In this condition, there is insufficient supply of oxygen to the brain, thus causing lightheadedness, blurred vision, nausea, an inability to concentrate, increased thirst, fatigue, clammy skin, and shallow breathing.

Hypoglycemia

Blood sugar levels less than 50mg can lead to dizziness, light-headedness and eventually syncope, or passing out. This is very dangerous which can result in a diabetic coma and finally death without effective treatment.
