It is well known that Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a type of genetic
kidney disease and it has the characteristic of familial aggregation. According
to the clinical experiments, there are some regulars for its attack and
development, which can be divided into five stages according to the illness
condition.
First, emergence stage: Polycystic Kidney Disease is a type of genetic
disease, which means that the patients are accompanied with this disease at the
beginning of their life. But during this stage the cysts are relatively small
and they are not easy to be examined. Before 20 years, this disease usually
won’t attack. However, for people whose family has PKD medical cases, they
should make early examination and observe the growth condition of the cysts.
During this stage the patient should pay attention to maintainance.
Second, growth stage: during the ages of 30-40, cysts will grow in a
relatively high speed. Medically, we call this stage as the growth stage. During
this stage, patients should intensify examination of the development of the
cysts. Western medicine usually adopts no method for this stage’ treatment, it
considers there is no need to treat and just aims at the symptoms, such as
hypertension and etc, which seems rather passive. However, in Chinese medicine,
we think we should adopt positive treatment, the aim of treatment is stopping
the growth of cysts or restraining their growth speed by Chinese medicine with
strong ability of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, and we
can further achieve the goal of extending patients’ longevity. So this stage is
considered as a key stage for promoting blood circulation and removing blood
stasis and restraining cysts growth by Chinese medicine.
Third, enlargement stage: for patients after 40 years, cysts will get a
further growth. When cysts are larger than 4cm and before diabrosis, it is
called enlargement stage. With the enlargement of cysts, there will be many
symptoms, such as backache, proteinuria, hematuria, increase of blood pressure
and so on. During this period, the patients should pay close attention to
examination. On treatment, this stage is the key stage for combining traditional
Chinese and Western medicine. The patients can adopt Chinese medicine to achieve
the goals of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis and expelling
toxin and discharging turbidity. And by eliminating the harmful cysts fluid the
patients can achieve the goals of protecting renal function. Therefore, this
stage is called the key treatment stage for combining traditional Chinese and
Western medicine.
Fourth, diabrosis stage: if cysts continuously grow, under the influence of
some external forces, they will burst. After diabrosis, the patients should take
a timely treatment, control the infection positively and avoid ichorrhemia and
acute deterioration of renal function, in order to benefit the treatments for
other symptoms.
Fifth, renal failure stage: for the treatments of uremia stage, the patients
should pay attention to protecting renal function, peritoneal dialysis and
hemodialysis are suitable for the end stage.
