1. If you have the damage of glomeruli, you would have kidney shrinkage. Do you know what the glomeruli are? Glomeruli are little balls of tiny blood vessels and are used to filtrate blood in order to discharge toxic substances and excessive water. They are in the outer layer of kidney and take apart of one third. In normal people, there are almost more than 2 million glomeruli in their kidneys. In the early stage, kidney would not shrink. Only when many glomeruli are hurt and hardened, they will affect the size of kidneys.
When you have glomeruli disease and kidney shrinkage, you may have gone into the end stage of kidney stage. Your kidney function has been lost much and you creatinine and urea level in blood is high. This means you need dialysis or kidney transplant.
2. When you found your kidneys are shrunk, you kidney function is not low. In this case, your renal interstitium may have been hurt. The renal interstitium is inside of the kidney and takes two third of the kidneys. Its main function is to give a support to kidney tissues. so when it is hurt, people’s kidney function is not lost much but kidney size has been smaller. They have not gone into renal failure. But the renal inflammation will damage glomeruli sooner or later. So people should block the inflammation in this stage with effective treatments.
