Why Diabetes Occurs among People after Kidney Transplant

Diabetes can be seen in 2.5~24% cases of kidney transplant. It can affect the patients’ survival remarkably. So, why Diabetes occurs among people after kidney transplant?

1. After transplant, some patients may use a large dosage of hormone to deal with the acute rejection reaction. Meanwhile, the stress reaction also plays a vital role in the occurrence of Diabetes.

2. After kidney transplant, if their body weight increases by 20% of that before surgery and the patients is accompanied by central obesity, the incidence of Diabetes is very high.

3. Immunosuppressive agents

The immunosuppressive agents can reduce storage of non-oxidizing glucose and activate the circulation of glucose/fatty acid. More free fatty acid is utilized and less glucose is consumed. As a result, the blood glucose level will rise.

4. The incidence of Diabetes is related to the long-term use of cyclosporine A. Cyclosporine A can damage islet beta cells thus reducing the use of insulin and also reduce the sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin.

Besides Diabetes, kidney transplant also has many disadvantages.

1. It needs blood matching. The patients have to wait a very long before kideny transplant is performed. Many patients may die during waiting time.

2. The patients have to deal with rejection reaction. In severe case, it may lead to the returning of the primary diease. For example, FSGS can reoccure in 50% cases after transplant.

To avoid the adverse effects of kidney transplant, the latest therapy-Immunotherapy is recommended to patients with Diabetes along with kidney damage. Up to now, this therapy has been applied successfully to treat diverse refractory diseases worldwide such as cancer, Diabetes, immune diseases etc.
